PRAISE AND GLORY: The Songs of Jews for Jesus by Joshua
Turnil Review by Rachel Friedlander
In his debut album, Joshua Turnil, the director of the Paris branch of Jews
for Jesus, releases thirteen tracks of familiar songs with a fresh sound. Fellow
musicians, including Jean Schwerzmann, Jacques Caruel, and Andreas Conzelmann,
accompany with such instruments as accordion, violin, flutes, darbouka, oud,
guitar, and piano. This impressive expression of talent allows the listener to
travel the world in the span of thirteen tracks.
The danger of performing predominantly well-known music is failing to
reinvent, fortunately Turnil quickly saves any lulls he creates. The album
creates a smorgasbord of influences and styles, alternating between upbeat and
slow tempos thus appealing to a wide range of tastes. Perhaps the best display
of talent is the finale: the three hidden bonus tracks. In these last
recordings, each of which are performed in French, Turnil truly stands out from
the crowd. |
